What’s the difference between HDPE and PET?
Plastic isn’t the most thrilling dinner party topic (unless you’re a materials scientist of course). But when you’re trying to keep peanut butter from turning into a science experiment, or making sure your new cleaner doesn’t melt through the floor, plastic suddenly becomes interesting...
In the world of plastic packaging, HDPE and PET are both solid on their own, but choosing the wrong one can lead to a very sticky situation (pun fully intended).
So today, we’re tackling the head-to-head match-up: HDPE vs PET. What are they, what makes them different, and which one should you trust to carry your product across shelves and into customers' hands? Let’s get into it.
What Is HDPE Plastic?
HDPE stands for High-Density Polyethylene. It's known for being:
- Chemical-resistant
- Slightly flexible
HDPE is naturally cloudy or matte and typically comes in white, black, or clear, though it can sometimes come in other colors.
When to Use HDPE
- Detergents and household cleaners
- Industrial products
- Oily food products
It’s no wonder HDPE is a favorite for products that need a solid barrier between them and the world. If your product is aggressive, oily, or acidic, HDPE’s got your back.
What is PET Plastic?
PET stands for Polyethylene Terephthalate
- Crystal-clear
- Lightweight
- Glossy and smooth
- Rigid
Unlike HDPE, PET plays nice with gentler substances but doesn't do well with strong solvents or high alcohol content. Think of it as more of a skincare bottle than a bleach jug.
When to Use PET
-
Beverages – Water bottles, juice containers, cold brew coffee.
-
Beauty products – Shampoos, conditioners, lotions.
-
Food jars – Peanut butter or spices.
PET gives your product that "look how pretty I am on a shelf" appeal. But behind that glossy smile, it’s still sturdy enough for everyday use, as long as you keep it away from the heavy-duty chemicals.
HDPE vs. PET
| Feature | HDPE | PET |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Matte, opaque | Clear, glossy |
| Flexibility | Slightly flexible | Rigid |
| Chemical Resistance | Excellent | Moderate |
| Ideal For | Cleaners, oils, harsh products | Beverages, cosmetics, light foods |
| Customization | White, black, natural colors | Multiple colors available |
| Sustainability | Widely recyclable (#2) | Also recyclable (#1) |
So how do you choose? Well...
If your product could be described as “not safe for skin contact”, choose HDPE.
If your product is something people want to see (and smell), choose PET.

Customization and Color
One of the common misconceptions is that HDPE is boring. Sure, it’s mostly found in white, black, or “natural” (cloudy). But with the right treatment? You can absolutely go full rainbow. It just might cost a little extra or require a custom run.
PET, on the other hand, comes standard in a variety of colors.
