It’s time. The salsa recipe is dialed in. The overnight oats are landing exactly the way you want them. The grain bowls are ready for a full production run. And then someone asks what you’re putting it all in, and you realize the word “container” covers a much wider universe than you originally thought.

Here’s what’s actually going on out there: the global plastic food container market is growing. That’s the magic of food businesses at every scale ordering containers that work: lightweight, food-safe, cost-effective, and protective enough to keep product intact from your facility to your customer’s table. The question is which plastic, in which form, for which job.

Why Plastic Still Dominates Food Packaging

Plastic’s continued dominance in food and beverage packaging comes down to a few things that haven’t changed regardless of what’s trending on LinkedIn.

Weight is the one most businesses feel in their shipping invoices. A 2-oz glass jar weighs about 82 grams. The same-size jar in HDPE plastic weighs about 13 grams. Multiply that difference across a pallet, across a bunch of orders, and that weight gap becomes a real number on your freight invoice. The kind that makes you feel vindicated the next time someone asks why you spent three weeks picking a container.

Food delivery and meal kit services have also pushed demand sharply upward. Fun fact: the global meal kit delivery market is expected to reach roughly $42.9 billion in 2026, and food delivery or takeaway applications now represent about 33.5% of the disposable food container market. Those containers survive transit, keep food at temperature, arrive with intact lids, and look presentable when someone opens their door expecting dinner at 7pm. The wrong container becomes a customer service call, and not the fun kind.

No container has ever made someone say “this food tastes better because of the packaging.” But the wrong container will absolutely make them say the opposite.

PET, HDPE, PP: They’re Not Interchangeable

The resin question is easy to overlook. It sounds like a specification buried deep in a catalog description, right up until you’re on the phone explaining why three hundred units of salsa leaked during a freight transfer, or why every container came back warped from the customer who figured “dishwasher-safe” was more of a suggestion than a spec.

PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is the clear plastic you see in deli containers, salad packaging, and most beverage bottles. It’s lightweight, transparent, and well-suited for dry or refrigerated foods, but it starts to deform at relatively low temperatures, so anything hot goes in a different container.

HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is great for sauces, condiments, nut butters, and anything moisture-heavy. It offers a strong barrier, handles cold storage well, and holds up through the shipping process. If you’re filling with something that has real weight and wants to seep through a lower-grade container, HDPE is calling your name.

PP (polypropylene) is the one to reach for when things get hot. PP is typically microwave-safe, which is why it’s the go-to for meal prep, hot food packaging, and anything your customer might reheat in the same container it arrived in. Given that about 56% of food packaging buyers now specifically prioritize microwave-safe options, PP has been getting a lot of attention from food service operators.

Ordering “clear food containers” without specifying a resin is a bit like ordering a vehicle without mentioning you need it to float. It’ll arrive, but it probably won’t be the right one.

Here’s the Part about Sustainability

The sustainability conversation around plastic has gotten more nuanced. The “plastic bad, paper good” framing is easy to land on, but the full picture is a little more interesting.

Food waste has a substantial environmental footprint of its own. Not-so-fun fact: The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that about one-third of all food produced globally is lost or wasted each year. Packaging that meaningfully extends shelf life and protects food through transit is one of the ways those goals get achieved.

Food Safety and the Specs That Actually Matter

Food-grade certification is the baseline. The FDA has documented which materials are safe for direct food contact, and those opinions run to several volumes of CFR regulations (thorough reading, available to all, recommended to none). The short version: use containers that specifically say food-grade. If it doesn’t carry that designation, run away. A light jog will also suffice.

BPA-free containers matter to your customers regardless of where the science lands on specific exposure levels, and in most markets it’s simply the expectation. You’ll be hard pressed to change any minds about this one.

Temperature ratings need to match your actual use case: a container rated for ambient storage will deform in the microwave, and acidic foods (tomato-based sauces, vinegar products, citrus concentrates) can degrade certain lower-grade plastics over time, affecting both container integrity and, eventually, flavor.

Disposable plastic containers for food service or delivery carry the same food safety requirements as anything else in your lineup. A container that fails in transit (leaking, cracking, losing its lid in a delivery bag) is a return, a complaint, or a negative review. That fortune you saved on cheap containers evaporates quickly when you’re processing refunds.

Frequently Asked Questions About Plastic Food Containers

What does “food-grade plastic” mean?

It means the container was manufactured with materials the FDA has certified for direct food contact. No harmful additives, nothing that leaches into your product. If a container doesn’t specify food-grade, it’s probably not food-grade.

Which type of plastic container is best for storing food?

Are plastic food containers microwave-safe?

Only if they’re labeled that way, and that label typically means PP (polypropylene). It’s worth checking before you heat anything. Grab the wrong container, microwave your lunch, and two minutes later the lid has welded itself to the rim and whatever was in there has become abstract enough to hang in a museum.

Can plastic containers hold hot foods or liquids?

Some can, some can’t. PP containers handle moderate heat well. PET and most thin disposables are built for cold or ambient storage. Check the temperature rating before filling with anything that just came off the stove.
