Jars of jam with labels

Starting a Business: Creating the Perfect Label

You’ve slaved over your perfect product. You’ve selected the ideal jar, bottle, tub, or other container. And you have chosen the exact closure for your product, complete with seals or child protection. Now you’re just about ready to put your creation on the shelves of stores around the country.

But then you take a look at your jar or bottle and realize you’re missing something. Something pretty important. Your product, the recipe you’ve been perfecting for years, just looks like an ordinary jar of home-canned goodness. Who in the world would be interested in buying that? Pretty much nobody.

Judge a Product by Its Container

People always say, “Never judge a book by its cover.” Well, when it comes to selling your recipe, you can throw that old adage out the window. Everyone is going to initially judge your product by what is on the outside. Most grocery stores (a few granola-eating exceptions excluded) don’t allow you to open every product you want and taste it before buying. You might get lucky and run into a sample station once in a blue moon, but not for every single product on the shelves. So how are your customers going to know if your barbecue sauce tastes better than that other bottle of barbecue sauce beside it that looks pretty much identical? Your consumers won’t know that yours is a secret recipe, handed down through the generations, and is guaranteed to blow their socks off. So how are you going to convince them that they should buy yours, and not the nearly-identical bottle sitting on the same shelf? That’s where we can help you! We’re going to convince everyone that yours is the best by showing them something amazing on the outside, thus judging that bottle of sauce by its cover.
